TheTechnical Assistance Team has partnered with the Regional Service Centers to host Implementation Workshops for Cycle 2 districts. The workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will focus on proactively planning for implementation and will cover scenarios for program monitoring, management, and communication. Districts are strongly encouraged to bring their team as a significant amount of time will be spent constructing action plans. D.A.T.E. Cycle 1 & 2 Program Consultations at the ESCs

Representatives from the Technical Assistance Center will be traveling to select Regional Service Centers over the next month to discuss Cycle 1, Year 3 applications, D.A.T.E. best practices, and continue conversations on program design and implementation with Cycle 2 districts. District D.A.T.E. Committee members can sign-up for individual half hour timeslots on the links provided below. We especially encourage Cycle 1 districts to send a representative to discuss the state of their D.A.T.E. program.

D.A.T.E. 101 Cycle 2 Webinar

The Technical Assistance Center will host a series of webinars to explain the fundamental elements of D.A.T.E. for Cycle 2 districts. These webinars are designed for D.A.T.E. committee members who were unable to attend one of the fall program design workshops and for those who attended the workshop who would like a mini-refresher on material covered on that day. They will last approximately one hour.

TAP is a comprehensive school reform system specifically authorized in the D.A.T.E. legislation. D.A.T.E. Cycle 2 Program Design Makeup Workshop

There will be a makeup program design workshop for any D.A.T.E. Cycle 2 district that did not attend one of our offerings in the fall. The workshop will be held on January 12, 2010 at Ashbel Smith Hall in Austin, TX, from 9 a.m.-4p.m. Ashbel Smith Hall is located at 201 W. 7th Street. The event will be on the second floor conference room.

 

Attendance at a program design workshop is a requirement of the grant. This workshop will be Technical Assistance's final offering. If your district did not attend a fall workshop, it must send a representative to this one.

D.A.T.E. Cycle 2 Program Design Workshops

The Technical Assistance Center will be hosting a series of workshops on Program Design for all potential Cycle 2 districts. Attendance at one of these workshops is a mandatory part of the application process. The successful creation of a performance award program requires significant collaboration between multiple stakeholders and individuals with various areas of expertise. Thus, it is important that the team of leaders who attends these sessions include, but is not limited to:

  • Member(s) of the district planning committee.
  • Member(s) of the local school board.
  • Superintendent.
  • An instructional leader.
  • Teacher(s).
  • Principal(s).
  • Grant writer(s).
  • Staff responsible for data or research.

D.A.T.E. Cycle 1 Large District Workshop: Transitioning from Payout to Year 2 Program Management

The Technical Assistance Center will be hosting a workshop on the transition from payout to Year 2 Program Management for large D.A.T.E. districts. The workshop will be held on Wed. October 7, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the AT&T Conference Center in Austin, TX, Room 301.

The workshop will cover:

  1. Responding to various scenarios that may arise after payouts (how to handle reactions from teachers, parents, the media)
  2. How to interpret and respond to program outcomes
  3. Role of principals in the D.A.T.E. program management process
  4. Program branding and long-term program philosophy

Also, John Hussey from Battelle for Kids will attend the workshop and be available for consulting and scheduling future site visits (free of charge to districts). Battelle can assist districts with Year 1 payouts, Year 2 program design modifications, data management, program branding, and communication strategies.

D.A.T.E. Cycle 1 Implementation Webinars

The University of Texas Institute for Public School Initiatives Technical Assistance Center will be conducting a series of Interactive Webinars throughout the Fall of 2009 to address various components of D.A.T.E. Grant Program Implementation. These webinars will provide districts participating in Cycle 1, Year 2 the opportunity to reflect upon the successes/challenges faced during the initial implementation year and begin focusing on new ways to improve program implementation throughout year 2.

Webinar Descriptions

  • D.A.T.E. 101 Webinar – Provide information on the purpose and structure of D.A.T.E. for district and campus administrators not familiar with the details of the grant program.  Other topics covered will be legislative changes enacted during the 81st Texas Legislative Session, program management elements, and technical services offered.
  • Payout Webinar – Provide detailed information on the Cycle 1, Year 1 payout timeline as well as action items moving forward.  The webinar will allow districts the opportunity to address any outstanding questions and/or concerns regarding payout in their districts before the October 15, 2009 payout deadline.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication Webinar – Review best practices regarding stakeholder engagement and communication as well as provide a framework for actions necessary to promote ongoing implementation during Cycle 1, Year 2.  Districts will also address the idea of program philosophy and the need to coalesce district practices around program goals.  One webinar will place specific focus on the challenges inherent in implementing a performance pay program within large districts and one will focus specifically on smaller districts.
  • Program Management Webinar – Examine best practices for various program components, including management, tracking, communication, monitoring, and evaluation.  Additional attention will be provided towards addressing issues of sustainability and best practices for building capacity throughout the district.  One webinar will place specific focus on the challenges inherent in managing a performance pay program within large districts and one will focus specifically on smaller districts.
  • D.A.T.E. Leadership – For Principals – Analyze the importance of principals and/or campus leaders in the implementation of performance pay programs at the campus level.  Attention will be paid to their roles and responsibilities as informers, mediators, and ultimately leaders in driving the beliefs and practices of all vested stakeholders.**The Oct. 1 session has been canceled.    
  • D.A.T.E. Leadership – For Superintendents – Examine the role superintendents play in implementing performance pay programs, including issues surrounding leadership, politics, delegation.  Focus will be on their role in laying out a vision and working with internal and external structures to create systems and structures necessary to ensure program success.

August Workshops on D.A.T.E. Continuing Grantees/Cycle Two

On August 5, 2009, we hosted a workshop for any new district, not currently in D.A.T.E., interested in applying for Cycle Two of the grant. The workshop covered grant requirements and planning strategies for program design and implementation. Click here to view the agenda.

On August 6, 2009, hosted a workshop for current D.A.T.E. grantees who are continuing on for a second year of the grant. The workshop covered continuation application requirements and how to evaluate and make improvements in a D.A.T.E. plan. Click here to view the agenda.

Both workshops were held at the Omni Hotel at 700 San Jacinto at 8th Street in Austin, TX from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The past symposium, "Strategic Compensation in Texas: Research, Policy and Action," brought together experts in the field of strategic compensation to discuss the national, state, and district perspective on this issue of central importance to teacher quality and student performance. 

Over 100 participants joined members of the research, practitioner and policy communities at this event to uncover lessons learned from practice, synthesize current research, and provide opportunities for thinking more strategically about educator compensation reform.

Regional Workshops on D.A.T.E. and TEEG Implementation

The Texas Education Agency and the Techncial Assistance team will host a series of regional implementation workshops for D.A.T.E. Cycle 1 and TEEG Cycle 3 grantees. The purpose of the workshops is to:

  • Engage districts and campuses in an interactive working session to discuss their programs;
  • Discuss implementation challenges and solutions to help districts and campuses develop action plans for D.A.T.E. and TEEG implementation;
  • Align technical assistance and ESC services with district needs; and
  • Provide one-on-one technical assistance and support for implementation.

  • Members of the D.A.T.E. and TEEG planning committees
  • Applicable central office district personnel that assist with program monitoring, reporting, data collection, and program implementation.

The workshops will be held at Educational Service Centers beginning on Monday September 22, 2008 and ending on Monday, November 10, 2008. Attendees should bring copies of their D.A.T.E. and/or TEEG plan(s). Attendees should register with their respective Educational Service Center. D.A.T.E. Feedback Audio Conferences

The Texas Education Agency and the Techncial Assistance team will host a series of 90-minute feedback audio conferences for non-participating (D.A.T.E.) districts that did not apply for Cycle 1 of the District Awards for Teacher Excellence (D.A.T.E.) grant program (2008-2009 implementation).

 

Purpose

The purpose of the audio conference is to:

  1. Gather feedback and information on the decision process behind opting not to participate in the D.A.T.E. program;
  2. Identify common challenges that influenced these decisions; and
  3. Obtain recommendations to inform future policy planning.

Requested Participants

All interested central office and school personnel from districts opting not to participate in the D.A.T.E. program.

 

Conference Format and Registration

TEA and IPSI will host a total of four (4) 90-minute feedback audio (see table below). Prior to the feedback sessions, registrants will be asked to provide information on past and future D.A.T.E. decision-making processes. The Institute for Public School Initiatives will manage online registration. School districts should designate one individual to register all district-wide participants. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, October 1, 2008. The call in number will be provided during the registration process.
